BuzzFeed Downsizes & We Go to VidCon

The Digital Dealflow

Good Morning,

There seems to have been an increase in media acquisitions this week as Nile & Co., Thai Randolph’s new venture, has acquired BuzzFeed’s lifestyle assets, As Is and Goodful, signaling a pivot toward creator-led commerce and vertical integration. BuzzFeed said it sold the pair of brands for $500,000 (at a loss of $800,000). Additionally, The Overlap network has acquired Mark Goldbridge’s suite of YouTube channels. The acquisition includes United Stand, the most popular Manchester United fan channel on YouTube.

Simultaneously, HubSpot’s acquisition of Futurepedia underscores the trend of B2B SaaS giants evolving into media-first organizations by acquiring high-intent audience engines. Meanwhile, the $2B sale of Learfield, the media and technology services company focused on college athletics, to TPG solidifies the role of institutional capital in re-engineering the financial infrastructure behind collegiate athletics.

Unrelated to the creator economy- but how many of you have ever owned a pair of Allbirds? In what might be the most bizarre headline this week, the publicly traded company announced its pivot to AI Compute.
